Careers at KIPP

Where our students are climbing the mountain to college,

and our faculty and staff are supporting their mission to achieve.

Who we are

KIPP is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools with a track record of preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. There are currently 66 KIPP schools in 19 states and the District of Columbia serving over 16,000 students, with Houston as our birthplace in 1994.   In Houston we are a family of 15 public charter schools (6 primary, 8 middle, and 1 high school).  Ninety percent of our students are low-income, more than 90 percent are African American or Latino, and to date, 90% of our alumni after 8th grade wind up matriculating to college.

What we do

KIPP builds a partnership among parents, students, and teachers that puts teaching and learning first. By providing outstanding educators, more time in school learning, and a strong culture of achievement, we are focused on helping all of our students climb the mountain to and through college. And through a strategic, regional growth plan, KIPP plans to expand our family of schools in Houston to 42 schools serving 21,000 students by 2024 — impacting the educational outcomes of more students in more underserved communities throughout the greater Houston area

Why it matters

Every day, KIPP students across the nation are proving that demography does not define destiny. Nationally, more than 80 percent of alumni from the original KIPP Academies have gone on to college, and that number is 90% in Houston! In 2007, 95 percent of our alumni matriculated to college-preparatory high schools—and have earned more than $25 million in scholarships and financial aid since 1998.

As we continue to achieve results in our growing network of schools, KIPP is redefining the notion of what is possible in public education. We are committed to sharing all that we learn in an effort to inspire other communities to consider the approach that has made KIPP schools and their KIPPsters successful.

KIPP Houston seeks qualified people to provide a quality education to the children of Houston or to support those who do. KIPP hires for a variety of positions, including teachers, secretaries, accountants, IT professionals, custodians, and school leaders.

  • Positions may be salaried or hourly, full time or part time;
  • All Full Time employees pay into TRS (Teacher Retirement System of Texas) instead of Social Security. Certain Part Time positions may pay into Social Security.
  • To be part of the KIPP Team and Family, one must be driven by the beliefs that ALL students WILL learn, and THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS on the path towards success in school and life. Much is expected of the students, and even more is expected of the teachers and those who support them. The school model is based on the need to have teachers who do whatever it takes to have each of his/her KIPPsters go to and through college.

Successful employees (Big KIPPsters):

  • Are Mission Driven: Big KIPPsters believe that all students, regardless of background, can and will achieve academic excellence and success in college and life through a combination of rigorous curricular expectations, excellent instruction, supportive relationships with adults, and personal commitment in a well organized school environment.
  • Are Relentless Achievers: Big KIPPsters have high expectations for their own achievement and that of students and fellow teachers. They have a strong background in, and command of, their content areas.
  • Demonstrate Excellence: Big KIPPsters demonstrate a proven track record of success, preferably with underserved students. They must have a bold and ambitious vision for annual and long term goals. Candidates must be committed to ongoing professional growth to help with student personal and character growth as well as academic achievement.
  • Possess Strong Team and Interpersonal Skills: Big KIPPsters work effectively with a cohesive and diverse team of teachers, students, and parents. They are able to listen and learn from others and have sincere respect for teachers, families, and students. Spanish language ability is a plus.
  • Exude Enthusiasm and Commitment: Big KIPPsters project a passion for teaching and learning on a daily basis while connecting with students of all background and levels. Employees uphold student learning and achievement as a teacher's highest priority and remain dedicated to the mission for student success in primary school, middle school, high school, college, and life.
