When the levees broke and New Orleans was evacuated in August 2005, Houston opened its doors to an estimated 240,000 people. In the midst of all the confusion, KIPP Houston immediately requested an extension of its own charter so that it could take in the children living in the Astrodome and other shelters around Houston. On October 3, 2005, N.O.W. opened its doors to 350 students in grades kindergarten through eight who were Katrina evacuees. The temporary extension was due in May 2007 and students either went back to New Orleans or were placed in other KIPP Houston schools.
